A century ago, when Mother Nature had blessed humankind with her bounty, everything was “eco-friendly.” When the need arose for a doormat to keep the interiors clean, they found the coir fibre found in abundance in Kerala, helpful. Coir is spun from the husk of the Coconut born on “Kalpavriksha”- or Coconut Tree.
Every part of the tree is useful in one way or the other. The fruit was already being used in their kitchens, so it was only natural to use its husk to spin a yarn i.e. coir – one of nature’s toughest and strongest rope and use it as a raw material to make mats on looms introduced into India by Europeans.
The industry started as a cottage set-up with thousands of coir spinning units in the back yards of our homes where housewives used to spin coir yarn by hand and later on using Ratts. Then in the late 18th century, Dutch immigrants introduced the weaving of doormats. The first coir factory in India, started at Alleppey by Darragh Smail & Company, was established in 1859 by an Irish American entrepreneur named James Darragh. This paved the way for organised factories. It was only a matter of time before local people, to set up their own factories and venture in to export business.
